Galway women cope better with the flu than Galway men, survey shows

Galway women cope better with the flu than men, that is the verdict of 71 per cent of people who took part in a recent survey commissioned by Danone.

Danone has conducted research into people’s attitudes towards winter to mark the launch of its Winter Defences Guide. When the findings are segmented by region, it showed that 71 per cent of Galwegians believe women cope better with colds and flu than men; 25 per cent believe they cope the same, while four per cent believe men cope better.

When considering how often they get sick, 58 per cent of Galwegians get one/two colds per year, while 33 per cent state they rarely get colds. A total of 63 per cent will “carry on regardless” when they get a cold. However the national average for this is 79 per cent.

Some 54 per cent of Galwegians prefer summer to any other season while 58 per cent feel less healthy in winter. However 38 per cent feel they are as healthy in winter as in summer. Of those who feel less healthy, 57 per cent believe this is because they are outdoors less. A total of 54 per cent get the same enjoyment out of winter as any other season.

When asked ‘What is your favourite thing about Winter?’, younger age groups said the Christmas and New Year festivities.

“Our Actimel Winter Defences Guide is full of tips and ideas on how to help look after yourself this winter,” said Jill McCarron, Health Affairs Manager, Danone. “A healthy, active lifestyle, supplemented with a daily probiotic drink such as Actimel, can help us prepare to love winter.”
