Moneenageisha Junction is set to be widened

The controversial Moneenageisha Junction is set to be widened in order to create an additional two lanes of traffic for 60 metres in advance of the junction.

The Galway City Council has recently negotiated the acquisition of a small strip of land on the Wellpark Road approaching the Moneenageisha Junction.

The strip of land will be used to increase the number of lanes on offer to traffic. It will involve the relocation of the current bus shelter 75 metres east of its current position on the Wellpark Road.

To ensure the new lanes are fully operational in the run up to Christmas period the road-widening measures will begin this week. Wellpark Road will remain open to traffic for the duration of the project, though motorists may experience minor delays due to the carriageway narrowing required to complete the works.

However the council aims to minimise disruption to traffic while this work is being completed. Pedestrians are advised that the footpath along Wellpark Road adjacent to the Wellpark Retail Centre will be closed while the works are underway.

These improvement works will last for approximately three weeks. City Hall believes that on completion, the new junction will prove time-saving for motorists travelling inbound on the Wellpark Road at busy periods.
