The sports pitches in Renmore are to be named after local man Pat Nolan, the original owner of the land, for his contribution to life in Ballyloughane and the Renmore area.
Councillors agreed to support the name change at Monday’s city council meeting.
The Galway City Council received a proposal from the Renmore Residents Association to officially name the sports pitches in the area as Nolan Park in recognition of Pat Nolan, the owner of the land, for his contribution to life in Ballyloughane and the Renmore area.
The matter came up for decision at Monday’s city council meeting. The city manager Joe MacGrath informed councillors that about one-third of the land was purchased from Patrick Shaughnessy while the then Galway Corporation bought the lands under a Compulsory Purchase Order in 1972.
Mr McGrath said that there is “widespread support from residents in Renmore’ to name the lands after Mr Nolan. Mr Shaughnessy has also been contacted and has “no objection” to the proposed new name for the pitches “and would be happy to see the proposal completed”.
