Planning application for Cashla Power Plant withdrawn

A planning application for a 200 megawatt Powerplant at Cashla, Athenry, which was facing fierce opposition from locals and politicians, has been withdrawn.

Constant Energy Ltd applied to the Galway County Council for a 200 megawatt powerplant at Cashla, but this week the local authority confirmed that the application has been withdrawn, following refusal to grant permission, and now it can not be appealed to An Bord Pleanála.

A number of meetings were held by residents, who unanimously voiced their opposition to the proposal. The planning application received almost 400 objections – the highest ever received by the Galway County Council against any application.

The news has been welcomed by Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish.

“This gas powered plant was totally unsuitable for such a densely populated area and also given its proximity to local schools in Lisheenkyle, Carnmore, and Cregmore,” he said. “The plant posed many potential risks to public health, the environment, and livestock in the area. Residents ran an exceptional campaign and I am delighted their concerns have been taken on board.”
