Selling Connemara to the Germans

The beauty of Connemara is being sold to the Germans in a bid to boost tourism in Ireland.

A German father and son, holidaying in Connemara and Galway city last week, are the feature of a new tourism promotion filmed by national German TV network.

The 30-minute feature, organised by Tourism Ireland, will air in spring 2010 with viewership figures of some 10 million.

The programme focuses on the variety of outdoor activities on offer in Connemara as well as the spectacular and dramatic landscape in this part of Ireland.

The father and son are featured gorge walking at Leenane with Killary Tours; riding a Connemara pony at Errislannan Riding Centre near Clifden; learning to fish; and also taking part in a golf lesson at Connemara Golf Club at Ballyconneely. A guided walk in the Connemara National Park as well as a visit to Inis Mór and a stop at the Connemara Smokehouse at Ballyconneely were also included in the holiday programme.

Kristina Gauges of Tourism Ireland Germany, says: “Germany is an important market for tourism in Ireland, last year delivering 470,000 visitors. We have a strong and comprehensive promotional campaign under way right now in Germany, with particular emphasis on value for money offers as well as the many activities and things to see and do in Galway and around the island of Ireland.”
