Subway stores team up with Special Olympics to support Mayo athletes

Subway store owners in Mayo have teamed up with Special Olympics Ireland to support the organisation as it works to change the lives of people with an intellectual disability throughout the county.

The two store owners and their staff are part of a year long nationwide fundraising campaign which has been launched by the Subway chain in the Republic of Ireland in partnership with Special Olympics Ireland.

Customers visiting the Subway stores at Barrett Street, Ballina; James Street, Westport; and at Mill Lane in Castlebar now have the option of donating their loose change into collection boxes which have been provided by Special Olympics Ireland.

“All 107 Subway stores throughout Ireland are putting their weight behind this fundraising campaign and we are confident that our customers in Mayo will join us in supporting Special Olympics Ireland,” said Geraldine O’Connor, who operates the stores at Barrett Street in Ballina and at James Street in Westport.

“Every cent we collect will make a difference and will help Special Olympics Ireland to continue to change the lives of its athletes, family members and volunteers,” Geraldine continued.

It is estimated that there are 35,000 people with an intellectual disability in Ireland. Special Olympics Ireland currently has 10,974 registered athletes. Donations from Subway customers will go towards providing sports training and competition for these athletes and will also be used to reach out to people who are not already involved, to recruit and to train volunteers and to develop new clubs locally.

The Subway chain’s support was recognised by Special Olympics Ireland CEO, Matt English.
