Congratulations offered to those who got Leaving Cert results this week

The waiting ended for the almost 2,000 students in Mayo who sat their Leaving Cert in June. Wednesday saw the results released to those who had sat the exams and next week will see the first round of CAO offers drop through letter boxes around the county.

Minister of State for Labour Affairs Dara Calleary passed on his congratulations to those who got their results this week saying: “Students across Mayo who received their results last Wednesday should feel proud of their achievement and embrace the future with confidence and ambition. The options for school-leavers have never been broader. Students can consider options in universities, institutes of technology, colleges of education, post-Leaving Certificate and FÁS courses, and private colleges. I’d like to congratulate every student, teacher, parent, and all the other people across the county who provided support to students leading up to and during examination time for their hard work and commitment and wish every student who sat their examination this year every best wish for the future.”

There is something for everyone

and advice is available

Former schoolteacher and now Fine Gael TD for Mayo, John O’Mahony, also passed on his congratulations to those who got their results but also advised that while some may not be happy with the results they got the Leaving Cert is only one step in life. He said: “The Leaving Cert is a major event in the life of people who go through the school system and I want to congratulate all who completed the exam. For some students, just sitting the exam was an achievement and I think it’s important that we highlight those students as well as the high achieving academic students. While the exam is important it must be remembered that it’s just one step along the way in life. There is something for everyone after school and we should not lose sight of that.”

For those who are unsure of what lies next for them after the results, the National Parents Council Post Primary in conjunction with the Department of Education and Science has launched its annual advice line. The service which opened on Wednesday is staffed by members of the Institute of Guidance Counsellors and can be contacted on 1800 265 165 and is open until next Tuesday. Gardai in Castlebar also praised the behaviour of the students who were celebrating their results, commenting that they were very well behaved and they had to make no arrests in relation to any thing to do with the celebrating students.
