City charity members oversee construction of community centre in Africa

Four members of the Galway based Malawi charity, Zikomo, headed to central Africa on Sunday for two weeks to oversee the final construction stages of its second community resource centre. The trip is the second so far this year.

The facility will provide orphan care, pre-schooling, basic health care provision, literacy classes, etc. The charity will fund furniture, equipment and supplies for the new building.

All monies given to Zikomo go directly to community-run projects in rural areas in Malawi. Volunteers fund their own expenses and pay full travel costs.

Since the charity was founded in 2002, Galway people have supported its fundraising events with “incredible generosity”, according to a spokesperson for Zikomo.

“It is hoped that, once again, donations will continue to be generous so that future projects in the Zikomo programme can continue.”
