Councillor Mike Crowe has this week confirmed that a number of changes are to be introduced at the Moneenageisha Junction in order for it to run more smoothly. Crowe, who is Chairperson of the Transportation Committee, stated:
“Since the change from the roundabout to the traffic lights this area has not functioned properly. I have held several meetings with the director and his team in order to come up with a solution.
“The new changes are currently at the design stage, but we hope they will be completed by the end of the month.
"It has been decided to let two lanes of traffic turn right from the Lough Atalia side so as to increase the flow of traffic. It’s my belief that this will alleviate the pressure on this road and will result in a better flow through the junction.
“I am also of the view that that we need to allow traffic to exit onto the Dublin Road from the Wellpark Shopping Centre. Currently all traffic exiting the centre must emerge onto the Monivea Road and then through the Moneenageisha Junction, which is adding to the problem. This centre is obviously in private ownership and this change will need their co-operation but I can’t see a huge difficulty there.
“I have also asked the engineers to give more priority to the inside lane coming down from the Bohermore roundabout in order to take some pressure off there. Once these changes come into force I think the junction will work better” concluded Crowe.
