Custody for hammer attack man accused of terrorising shop staff

City man was armed with a hammer and a knife, court is told

A man accused of assaulting and terrorising staff at tattoo shops while armed with a hammer and a knife has been remanded in custody again after the bailsperson expressed concerns that bail conditions would not be adhered to.

Luke McMahon (38 ) with an address given as 36 William Street, Galway, appeared before Judge Aeneus McCarthy at the holiday sitting of Galway District Court last Tuesday.

McMahon is charged with the criminal damage of the door of the reception area, being intoxicated in a public place, and threatening and abusive behaviour at Victor Tattoos, 3 Lwr Abbeygate Street, on June 23, 2009.

He is also charged with possession of the hammer on the same date with intent to intimidate a person. It is alleged that he banged on the door of the premises with the hammer and shouted at the staff.

The following day, June 24, McMahon went to Custom Tattoo in Abbeygate Street and is charged with being in possession of a flick knife with intent to cause injury, intimidate, or put in fear two men, contrary to Section 9(5 ) of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act.

McMahon is further charged with being intoxicated and in possession of a flick knife at Shop Street on June 25 and with assaulting a person with intent to cause bodily harm on the same date at Victor Tattoos, 3 Lwr Abbeygate Street.

In court this week Inspector Pat McHugh said that the defendant’s mother no longer wished to act as bailsperson.

Bail had been granted provided that one third of the €3,000 independent surety was lodged.

McMahon’s mother said that she had concerns that her son would not adhere to the bail condition of recieving immediate treatment and that she had her own health worries.

The defendant was remanded in custody with consent to bail to appear at Harristown District Court on August 7, 2009
