GALWAY REGGAE and techno fans are in for one hell of a Bank Holiday Weekend treat with the Mini Mantua Weekender on Saturday August 1 and Sunday 2 in An Pucán, Forster Street.
On Saturday at 9pm, Galway’s Rootical Sound System will be in full effect accompanied by Scotland’s Mungos Hi Fi, MC Soom T, and Cork dubstepper Radikal Guru. There will also be guest MCs, and singers.
Mungo’s Hi-Fi is one of Britain’s leading dancehall and dubstep sound crews. They take the best of traditional roots, danchall dub, and reggae vibes and bring them up to date in their own inimitable style. They have collaborated with Jah Shaka, Sister Nancy, Ranking Joe, Tippa Irie, Top Cat, and Warrior Queen.
MC Soom T was brought up on the rough streets of Glasgow’s Maryhill, an experience that has influenced her social and politically conscious lyrics. Since 2000 her politically motivated, soul driven, and powerful rap toasting and vocals have appeared on more than 50 commercial and independent releases on compilations, mixtapes, albums, singles and videos.
From 9pm on Sunday there will be performances from Dublin based electronica and dubstep act The Alphabet Set in An Pucán.
From the humble beginnings of a monthly gig in a tiny basement in a Dublin pub, the Alphabet Set has become Ireland’s largest independent collective of electronic musicians and has notched up scores of releases on vinyl, CD, and on the net.
There will be DJ wizardry from Vince Mack Mahon, dancehall beats from Prince Kong with Super Extra Bonus Party’s MC Rodriquez and Lady Grew. Also performing will be Don Rosco, a long time stalwart of the pirate radio scene in Dublin, while Noid the Droid and Laminator lay down bass heavy beats.
Admission on both nights is €10. For more information go to www.mantuafestival.com
