Every summer, Saint Albert School brings students from across Spain to Athenry for a four-week cultural and language-immersion programme, and local host families are at the heart of its success.

Looking ahead to the 2026 academic year, the school is seeking new and returning households to welcome students aged12 to 17 from June 26, to July 24.

The goal of the programme is simple: to help young people improve their English while experiencing genuine Irish family life. The students attend school, from 10am until 5pm each weekday, enjoy organised tours on Saturdays, including favourites such as the Cliffs of Moher, and spend Sundays entirely with their host families.

“We want our students to feel like a real member of the family,” explains programme director Alberto. “It’s more than learning English, it’s an experience.”Host families receive payment, and there is no requirement to have children in the home. Many families without children, or even grandparents, take part.

“What matters most is providing a warm, engaging environment where students join in daily life rather than spending time alone. Because of the positive experience, 40 to 50 per cent of families host again, creating long-lasting connections. Alberto himself still keeps in touch with the family he stayed with on his first trip to Ireland many years ago.Support is always close at hand. Each town has an Irish coordinator, in Athenry, this is Samantha, who is available to assist families with any questions, emergencies or practical concerns.

“Families are never on their own,” says Alberto. “We give all information before the trip, and we are always contactable.”
