Two men charged with €2,000 ‘cleaning’ deception of elderly city woman

Two brothers accused of alleged theft by “deception” of €2,000 from an elderly woman have been remanded on continuing bail for service of the book of evidence.

Augustine Doherty (23 ) with an address at Hillcrest, Fairhill, Commins Road, Cork, and Hugh Doherty (35 ) with an address at 4 Castle Park, Clondalkin, Dublin, appeared at Galway District Court last Monday charged with making gain or causing loss by deception at Curralee, Headford Road, on July 9, 2009.

Inspector Ernie White told the court that it would be alleged that two men went to the home of an 84-year-old woman and offered to clean the footpath, quoting a fee of €90. The woman then wrote a cheque for €2,000. The cheque was later cancelled and the men were arrested the following day.

Judge Aeneus McCarthy deemed the matter too serious to be heard in the District Court and remanded the defendants by consent on continuing bail to appear again at Galway District Court on November 18, and extended time for service of the book of evidence. Legal aid was also granted.
