Several rowers from Coláiste Iognáid have been selected to row in international competitions this month following the National Rowing Championships in Co Cork.
The Jes were part of the phenomenal Galway success at the Nationals at which 13 titles were won by city crews.
The Jes’ Aifric Keogh and Zoe Mannion, coached by Redmond O’Brien, won their pot in the junior women’s coxless pair - the first for the Jes in this event and the girls have been chosen to represent Ireland in both the pairs and and the eights at the Coupe de la Jeunesse in Vichy, France, at the end of the month.
Also competing for Ireland will be Eddie Mullarkey and Keith Duffy. The pair were just pipped for a pot in the junior men’s coxless pair, but the did enough to catch the eye of the national selectors and have been chosen to represent Ireland in the Homes International in Nottingham later this month.
The successful junior men’s 15 quad crew, comprising Andrew Bell, Matthew Kelly, Robert Flynn, Reuben Cruise, and coxed by Patrick Oliver, won their race impressively. Three of that same crew and cox, supplemented by Ian Murphy, Eoghan Coughlan, Stephen Gilligan, Liam Mooney, and David Noone, finished a creditable third in the Junior 16 eight - an event won by the Bish.
Keith Duffy and Eoghan Staunton also medalled in the junior men’s double, while Andrew Bell was a close second in the junior 15 single sculls.
