Volvo has revealed its new ES90 flagship saloon, which it claims will be capable of traveling up to 700 kilometres on a single charge. This can be achieved thanks to the brand's new 800-volt technology which makes it debut in Volvo's latest all-electric model.
Volvo says its new 800-volt system incorporates the battery cells, e-motors, inverter, and charging. In addition it will integrate climate and thermal systems, resulting in charging speeds, fuel efficiency and driving performance all benefitting.
According to Volvo, a higher voltage system means that it can deliver more kilowatt power and range with the same current as a 400-volt system. This approach generates less heat, meaning the battery can be charged faster up to 350kW without overloading the electric system.
There are three battery options available for the new ES90, however it is unclear whether all three will be offered in Ireland when the model arrives here at the end of the year.
The first is a single-motor rear-wheel drive 88kWh battery with outputs of 333hp and 480Nm, and a WLTP range of up to 650km. Next is a twin motor 102kWh battery with outputs of 449hp and 670Nm, and a quoted range of up to 700km. Finally, there's a performance version of the 102kWh model, upping the outputs to 680hp and 870Nm with a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of just four seconds. Quoted range remains the same at 700km.
Volvo says the ES90 will be available in seven exterior colours and four-wheel options that vary from 20- to 22-inches in size. There is a 424-litre boot extending to 733-litres with the rear seats down, while a 22-litre 'frunk' adds to the available storage space.
Inside, Volvo states that the focus is on “premium comfort, authentic materials and purpose-driven design, in line with our Scandinavian identity and design principles”. Similar to the EX30, the new ES90 will have a 14.5-inch portrait touchscreen that runs a Google-based infotainment system.
Irish pricing and spec for the new Volvo ES90 will be announced later this year.
