Audi has scrapped its model naming strategy, just two years after it was first announced.

TFSI will denote its combustion-powered models. Numbers will no longer be reserved for Audi’s fully-electric models, which instead will continue to use the e-tron moniker.

The first new model to showcase the new strategy will be the combustion-engined Audi A6, which was originally set to be called the Audi A7. For example, this means that the Audi A6 TFSI will be clearly differentiated from the all-electric A6 Avant e-tron.

The German automaker said the decision to abandon its model naming strategy “follows the wishes of our customers as well as feedback from our international dealers”.

Audi has also said that no retroactive name changes are planned concerning models already on sale.
