The ongoing discharge of raw sewage, fat, and grease oils into the Eglinton Canal at Lower Dominick Street has been going on for the past five years and the situation must be rectified immediately.
This is the view of Independent city councillor Catherine Connolly who has tabled a question on when the works will take place for Monday’s city council meeting.
In 2008 the council confirmed that money had been sanctioned by the Government to carry out the appropriate works to connect the premises in question up to the main pipes both in Lower Dominick Street and in Nuns Island.
The works were to start in the spring. However management informed councillors that the works were postponed until after the Volvo Ocean Race.
“This event has come and gone and there is still no sign of the works commencing,” said Cllr Connolly. “To allow raw sewage and fats and greases to pour openly into the lower canal and into the Claddagh Basin is totally unacceptable.”
