After a memorable 60th anniversary year of celebrations in 2024, Galway Film Society will begin its Spring 2025 Season, this weekend.
On Sunday January 19, and Monday January 20, GFS will present six films from around the world at the Pálás cinema.
Speaking about the new season, Louise Casey Conneally, chairperson of Galway Film Society said: “In light of the devastating news about the impending closure of Pálás, GFS, in collaboration with the team at Pálás, has made a huge effort to bring an outstanding programme of extremely strong titles to its audience this spring. We would appreciate if you would demonstrate your support for GFS and Pálás by joining us for this wonderful season of films.”
The season will kick off with the French romantic comedy The Tasting, which features laughs, a few tears and plenty of wine.
Other programme highlights including Mike Leigh’s highly-anticipated new film Hard Truths; the searing and essential Iranian thriller The Seed of the Sacred Fig; the meticulously crafted and dark Danish tale The Girl With The Needle; and the compelling, moving Brazilian drama I’m Still Here, which is the latest film from Oscar-winner Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries ) and recently won a Golden Globe for its lead actress Fernanda Torres.
GFS will also continue its support of emerging filmmakers by providing an important platform for new Irish talent. GFS will screen the short film Three Mums preceding the screenings on Sunday, February 2 and the following Monday.
The season will finish out with special preview screenings of the Italian drama Vermiglio, which won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at last year’s Venice International Film Festival. Vermiglio, which is also on the shortlist selection for the Best International Feature at this year’s Oscars, will come to Galway audiences fresh from its Irish premiere at the 2025 edition of the Dublin International Film Festival in February.
