Classical music and literary events for Clifden arts week

CLASSICAL MUSIC to thrill the ears and readings from poems and novels which will stir the imagination are set to be the order of the day at the Clifden Community Arts Week which begins tomorrow.

Classical Music

The RTÉ Concert Orchestra will perform a show entitled Golden Oldies of Opera and Operetta in the West Connemara Leisure Centre at 8pm tomorrow night. Expect to hear pieces from The Barber of Seville, Don Giovanni, and The Pirates of Penzance. The soloists will be Majella Cullagh (soprano ) and Brendan Collins (baritone ).

In celebration of the bicentenary of the publication of Moore’s Melodies; a concert celebrating Thomas Moore, My Gentle Harp will take place on Sunday in the Church of Ireland at 1pm. The celebrated melodies will be interpreted by Dean Power, Ciara McMackin, and Sarah Dolan, accompanied by pianist Una Hunt.

On Saturday Mark Keane will performing work by Oliver Messiaen on Saturday in the Church of Ireland at 1pm. Messiaen is considered by many as the greatest composer for the organ since Bach.

Lunfardia will bring the tangos and milangos of Buenos Aires to Clifden when they play the Station House Theatre on at 8pm. French Canadian trio L’attisée, from Québec, will dazzle audiences with their songs, reels, and original Celtic/French/Québecois music at 10.30pm in Mullarkey’s Bar.

Concert pianist Phillip Martin will perform pieces by Chopin, Herz, Gottschalk, and his own ‘Prisms’ at 8pm on Tuesday 23 in the Church of Ireland.

The brilliant Irish classical guitarist Redmond O’Toole will play an eight-string Brahms guitar in the cello position in the Clifden Library on Wednesday 24 at 1pm.

Literary events

Jarlaith Fahy, whose The Man Who Was Haunted by Beautiful Smells was recently published by Wordonthestreet Press will read in the Clifden Library today. Novelist and short story writer Carlo Gebler is in the Station House Theatre on tomorrow.

Also taking palce tomorrow is a reading by members of the Galway Arts Centre’s Advanced Poetry Workshop (facilitator Kevin Higgins ) at Clifdel Library at 1pm. Admission is €5.

Paul Durcan will recite passages from his own works in Foyle’s Hotel on Saturday, including his 1985 publication The Berlin Wall Café. Derek Mahon will celebrate 30 years of Poetry Ireland with a reading of his own works on Sunday in the Station House Theatre, Clifden.

Louis de Paor will also give a reading from his works on Monday in the Clifden Library, which includes a study of narrative technique in the short fiction of Martin O’Cadhain.

Belfast’s Gerald Dawe, presenter of the RTÉ Poetry Programme and author of six collections of poetry, will join fellow RTÉ broadcaster John Quinn, for an evening of poetry and literature in Foyle’s Hotel on Wednesday.

Also appearing at the festival will be American poet, essayist, novelist, and playwright, Tess Gallagher on Friday September 26 in Foyle’s Hotel. David Lorimer will give the inaugural John Moriarty Memorial Lecture on Saturday 27 in the Station House.
