Appeal against telecoms mast in Barna

An appeal has been submitted to An Bord Pleanála concerning plans to construct a 24-meter-high telecommunications lattice tower in Barna.

The proposal, submitted to Galway City Council by Vantage Towers Limited, includes a headframe fitted with antennas, dishes, and related telecommunications equipment, all secured within a fenced enclosure.

The project also involves creating an access track to connect with an existing public road to the south. Additionally, a northern access track is planned to link with a future service road once construction on the N6 Galway City Ring Road is completed.

Vantage Towers Limited has justified the development, citing its importance for maintaining network coverage for residents and businesses in the Cappagh Road area, located on the city’s western outskirts. The new tower is intended to replace an existing structure currently shared by Vodafone, Eir, and Three Ireland, which must be removed to accommodate the planned N6 Galway City Ring Road.

Despite local opposition, Galway City Council granted approval for the project in November, attaching two conditions. Among the concerns raised in submissions to the council were objections to the location of the development, given its overlap with the N6 Galway City Ring Road planning application, which is still under review by An Bord Pleanála.

Earlier this month, a third-party appeal against the approval was filed with An Bord Pleanála by Kevin Kelly. The board is expected to issue its decision by April 16, 2025.

Vantage Towers Limited, a subsidiary of the Vodafone Group, owns 1,300 telecommunications masts across Ireland.
