When lazy process server Dale Denton (Seth Rogen ) witnesses a drug-related murder between a crooked cop and a dangerous drug lord, he and his drug dealer Saul (James Franco ) have to go on the run. Dale panicked at the crime scene and dumped his joint of a rare new weed called Pineapple express, which was then traced back to Saul. The two fugitives quickly flee with the cop and his accomplice hot on their trail.
Unlike other stoner movies like Harold and Kumar get the munchies, this film is far more witty and mischievous and will leave you falling off your seat with laughter. Dale and Saul make a comical duo - kind of similar to Laurel and Hardy, only more stoned versions.
As with the hilarious Superbad, Pineapple Express is written by Seth Rogen and his partner Evan Goldberg and you can see certain similarities creeping through. The 'bromance' between Saul and Dale is a slightly more mature version of the intimate bond between teenagers Evan and Seth from Superbad, which at times can be quite endearing.
The men’s surreal stoner talk mixed with the car chases and action sequences actually blend suprisingly well, and it’s not all about giggling and getting the munchies.
Franco puts his own spin on playing a stoner, portraying Saul as a kind-hearted, well-intentioned, yet hardcore drug dealer.
It seems that the recent flow of films about loveable losers and dysfunctional members of society won’t be slowing down any time soon. With films like Superbad, Knocked Up, Juno, Little Miss Sunshine, and Step Brothers all having their own cult following, it seems that the boundaries of mainstream comedy have not yet been pushed as far as they can go.
This is definitely one not to miss, meaning that these losers actually emerge as winners in the end.
