Blue Teapot Theatre Company will premiere ‘Fairy Tree’ a new theatre show for children from 4th – 7th December at Blue Teapot Theatre, Galway.

Written and directed by Rod Goodall, Fairy Tree is a humorous, charming, festive theatre show that incorporates puppetry, original music and song aimed at children aged from six years and suitable for all audiences. As with all Blue Teapot’s work, the cast comprises seven actors with intellectual disabilities who work together as a professional ensemble.

A perfect winter’s tale, Fairy Tree tells a story of fairies, so cold they are freezing to the trees. Two young girls notice them and ask the community to take the fairies into their houses to warm up. Not everyone is pleased about the idea but it is agreed, as long as the fairies do not overstay their welcome. Will the fairies stick to the agreement?

Rod Goodall’s latest work is inspired by “the importance of our relationship with each other, nature and perhaps the fairy world” commenting “This is a warm-hearted tale, a celebration and acceptance that we are all different. The show explores the tradition of bringing a Fir tree into our homes at mid-winter but only for twelve days. Why is that?”

Rod Goodall’s career in theatre spans six decades. Throughout, he has directed, acted, written and produced. A founding member of Footsbarn Travelling Theatre, Goodall became Artistic Director & Performance Director of Ireland’s premier spectacle theatre company Macnas (1987 – 1997 ) to international acclaim.

Speaking about the origins of the play, Artistic Director Petal Pilley explained, “The impetus for Fairy Tree came from conversations with our actors to inform a strategic arts plan and capture their artistic ambitions. Several expressed they wanted to create theatre for children with one actor saying that he had never seen anyone like him on stage as a child. Not long after, I read a short story by Rod Goodall about the presence of the fairy realm in our everyday lives and saw the spark for a new piece of children’s theatre. This led to the commission”.

Fairy Tree is at 7pm, Wednesday 4 – Saturday 7 December 2024. Matinee at 3pm Sat 7 December at Blue Teapot Theatre, Munster Avenue, Galway.

Free Sensory Tours of stage and set available on Saturday 7 December. Early booking is strongly advised.
