Daft.ie rental and house price figures show that since the last General Election average house prices in County Galway have increased by over €90,000, while average rents in the County have increased by over €600 per month.
Sinn Féin General Election candidate for Galway East, Cllr Louis O’Hara, says that unaffordable housing is the legacy of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael in Government, and that Sinn Féin’s housing plan will make housing affordable across Galway.
Cllr O’Hara said that when the last General Election was held in February 2020, the average rent in County Galway was €933 and the average house price in the County was €210,000.
“Under this government the average rent has skyrocketed to €1567, while the average house price in County Galway has risen to €301,410.
“Workers and families across Galway cannot afford to rent, and they cannot afford to build or buy a home of their own. This is the legacy of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael in Government," he said.
“Ending the housing crisis would be the number one priority of a Sinn Féin government. We have set out in our plan, ‘A Home of Your Own’, how we would end the housing crisis and bring the dream of home ownership back into reach for working people.
“Sinn Féin is committed to delivering 300,000 new homes, private and public, affordable and to rent, over the lifetime of the next government, and we are committed to enabling people to build homes in their own communities.
“Our plan is fully costed, detailed and deliverable. It would make a real difference for people in Galway by ensuring they can finally have a home of their own.
“That is why this election is a crucial opportunity to vote for a change of government and to end the housing crisis," he added.
