Knocknacarra-based Galway City West Councillor Donal Lyons has this week welcomed Galway City Council Parks and Recreational staff who have commenced improvement works to paths in Cappagh Park. The works now under way will see some of the paths being resurfaced.

"I had received a number of representations from parents, walkers and joggers but in particular parents with prams and push chairs who expressed concerns regarding the poor surface on the paths and the need to resurface them," Cllr Lyons said. "Cappagh Park is a fantastic local amenity with active and passive use but the majority of paths have not received any remedial work since there were installed when the park was officially opened in 2001.

"A special allocation of funding was included in this year’s Galway City Council Budget to address the poor state of repair of some of the paths in Cappagh Park. The allocation this year will see about a quarter of the paths receiving a new surface. It is hoped that a further allocation can be included in next year’s budget in order to continue the improvements now underway.

"I want to thank the elected members of the council, particularly those councillors that were in the then Ruling Pact, for including an additional funding allocation in the budget to get this work under way," he added. "And thanks also to the officials at Galway City Council Parks and Recreation Department for their help in addressing my representations and carrying out the work."
