One of Galway's oldest family businesses and one of Ireland's most established travel companies, Fahy Travel was founded initially as a shipping company by Kate Fahy in the 1880s.
Widowed at a young age, Kate was one of the first female entrepreneurs of her time, establishing her shipping company on Bridge St more than a century and a half ago. Predating commercial aviation, Kate's shipping company aided the emigration journey for numerous Galwegians, even helping locals and native Irish speakers to navigate the then US emigration application process. As a result, a number of Galwegians left Ireland for life, travelling to the US by sea in search of their American dream.
When the commercial aviation industry began in the 1960s, airline timetables were published monthly in books and airline reservations were made over the phone. At the time, tickets were handwritten and agent coupons were returned to the airlines by post monthly.
In the 1980s, Fahy Travel brought the first data line from Athlone to Galway, as a result serving as a hub for all travel agents in Galway to book flights through its dedicated distribution system.
With the introduction of the internet, came the technology and access for all of us to make our own travel arrangements online, but thanks to Fahy Travel's reputation as a reliable agency and its great customer service (which will never go out of fashion ), the company continues to do well. Fahy Travel, and its excellent sales team, are delighted to 'provide' an award winning service to their valued customers in Galway.
