THE PASSING of Leo Healy was widely and deeply mourned by trad musicians in Ireland and by Galway trad musicians in particular. Now many of them are coming together for a special tribute concert.
Songs for Leo - a tribute to the late Leo Healy takes place in the Róisín Dubh on Tuesday September 30 at 8pm with all proceeds going to the Irish Heart foundation.
Leo Healy was brother to Greg and Kevin (co-owners of Róisín Dubh ) and he was also the partner of Sharon Shannon. He died on May 7 this year from a heart attack.
The music at Leo’s funeral Mass and the graveside was very special, helping to make the day much easier for all who loved him. Sharon’s friends played on the day before going into the studio to recorded the music they had just played.
The result was 500 copies of a CD of all the songs Leo loved. Although the album is not for sale anywhere, this upcoming concert at the Róisín Dubh will be a live performance of those same songs.
The concert is a veritable who’s who of Irish trad. Sharon Shannon will lead the concert and she will be joined by Eleanor Shanley, Seamus Begley, Mundy, Dessie O’Halloran, The Brennan Sisters, Greg Cotter, John Hoban, Jim Murray, Jack Maher, Kelvin Busher, Gerry Paul, Richie Buckley, Dezi Donnelly, Mary Shannon, Niall Teague, Paul O Driscoll, Jason Duffy, plus some surprise guests.
All the acts are giving their time free of charge so 100 per cent of door proceeds will go directly to the charity.
Admission is €30. Tickets are available from the Róisín Dubh, Zhivago, and Redlight Records.
