Two students received the highest academic awards at the 2024 Kumon Awards Ceremony, which took place in the Menlo Park Hotel and was opened by the Mayor of Galway city, Cllr. Peter Keane on Sunday, September 8.
The students, Amala Robin and Daron Gabriel D. Franco, were recognised for completing their Kumon programmes years ahead of the course schedule, with Robin completing her English programme three years earlier than expected, and Franco completing his maths programme two years earlier than expected.
Kumon is world's largest after-school maths and reading programme, created and designed to help children of any ability to build ability and fluency in the areas of reading and mathematics. The Kumon Method of learning utilises worksheet study and instructor guidance to ensure that students understand the subject material, with students moving 'up' in levels once they achieve comprehension and understanding of the subject matter.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Yohei Seike, deputy general manager of Kumon Europe and Africa, stated that fewer than one per cent of the global population of students become 'completers', i.e. completing the maths and / or English programme to university entry level. Both Robin and Franco are now firmly in that one per cent.
In addition to recognising the hard work of Robin and Franco, the achievements of other Kumon students were celebrated with 44 students who are six months, or more, ahead of the curriculum for their age group receiving bronze medals at the ceremony. In addition to those 44 students, 12 students who are working two or more years ahead of the curriculum for their age received silver medals, with seven students receiving gold medals for being three years (or more ) ahead of their age group's curriculum.
Ms Elizabeth Gannon, area manager Kumon Ireland announced the trophies for the 'most outstanding students' who are working on the digital platform, Kumon Connect.
Daniel Samy received the Junior Champion trophy, having completed 2,000 worksheets in the early levels of maths and English in six months. Daron Gabriel D. Franco received the Kumon Connect Senior Champion Trophy, for covering 1,600 worksheets of the highest levels of mathematics in nine months, completing the programme.
Mr. Richard Trimmer complimented the team of Kumon Galway City West for their achievements in developing their students of all ages and abilities.
The Stephen Hayden Trophy for personal excellence was awarded to Parth Holehonnur (Claregalway ) for his outstanding determination to keep on track, and his success with his advanced studies, despite significant health issues during the year.
