There will be a book signing event for a new comic setting the Children of Lir myth in the west of Ireland during World War II at SubCity Comics in Galway’s Corbett Court Shopping Centre on Saturday, September 14, from 2pm.
Writer, artist, musician and filmmaker Paul J Bolger will be signing copies of The Children of Lir graphic novel by Bolger and Richard Clements.
The story follows young Jenny Hennessy, an orphan in bombed out Britain who is evacuated to her grandparents’ home in Ireland during the Blitz. There she meets a hermit, his family of swans, a gang of animal friends and the local bullies.
The authors say it is a light-hearted novella for all ages, but that memories of the Irish Civil War and the divisions it created are hinted at and questioned in the book, as are the consequences of colonialism.
The Children of Lir is published by Atomic Diner, priced €15.
