Summer may be slipping away but dresses have lost none of their allure as we face into September. All that is required now is a cardigan or jacket to provide an additional layer of warmth to ward off seasonal chills.

Dresses, particularly celebration ones, dominate the Kate Cooper autumn/winter collection which is being hailed as one of its best. The accent this season is on figure enhancing styles. Waists are shaped and emphasised and pleats are gentle and loose. Satin dresses have a mock wrap shape for perfect draping.

The shift dress in modern purple is A-lined for a flattering fit. The A-line silhouette, which is fitted at the hips and gradually flares out towards the ground, accentuates the waist. It can help to balance out wider shoulders and hips, making it a perfect fit for almost any body shape.

A cerise pink dress from the collection has a pleated side panel while a rich winter toned one has a curved empire line waist for a forgiving definition.

If you are not a dress fan, there are many other winning styles available. The Kate Cooper range has been broadened and re-energised with trousers and skirts being added.

This season, a contemporary jumpsuit joins the collection. With its gathered bustline and a front tie panel, it is perfect to step put in for anything from a night out to a wedding.

A midi length pleather skirt will add an edge to your autumn style. Perfect for those who like to make a statement, you can style it with an organza, bell sleeved blouse for sleek style or an oversized sweater for more casual days.

A satin bias cut skirt offers a nod to the 90s fashion trends which are making a comeback. A long, jersey skirt with gathered side pockets is an ideal staple for your cold-weather wardrobe.

Trousers play a significant role in this season's collection and they come in different silhouettes. Wide leg ones are cut to look elegantly languid and stylish. They are contrasted with a fitted waistcoat in smart pinstripes. Alternatively, the same trousers can be worn with a crisp white shirt with flower trim for impact. Cropped, wide leg trousers are also making their presence felt this season.

Slimmer shapes are also featured but are given a seasonal update with the popular fabric choice, pleather.

The power of accessories

Accessories are the key to style and a totally individual look. They allow you to stamp your personality on a garment and add wit, glitz, and glamour to it.

Here are some reasons why you should say "yes" to accessories this season as well as advice about how to use them to your advantage:-

They add interest to your ensemble. This is especially important if you are wearing a plain or sober outfit which may need to be enlivened or refreshed.

They extend the life of your clothes. Accessories can revitalise last year's favourites, bringing them up-to-date instantly.

They bring your outfit together. They can pick up key colours in your garments, creating a complete look.

Accessories add versatility. They offer endless possibilities to style outfits differently. A change of accessories will enable you to wear the same ensemble repeatedly and ensure that it always looks and feels different.

They complement or add the finishing touch to your outfit. Sometimes, all it takes is the skilful use of accessories to add that special something.

They are an easy and inexpensive way to elevate even the simplest garment. A plain white T-shirt and jeans can be instantly upgraded with a stylish scarf, a slim belt, or a dazzling bracelet. Accessories provide that extra flair, turning an ordinary outfit into something show-stopping.

Accessories can boost your confidence. They are not just tools for self-expression, they can uplift your mood and confidence. Wearing beautiful pieces or stylish fashion add-ons will make your feel and look good.

Balance is important when accessorising. If you are petite and want to appear taller, do not wear too many large pieces. If you are wearing big earrings, it might be a good idea not to go overboard with your other accessories. Stick to one or two statement pieces.

Use bold coloured accessories to bring your outfit to life. A black dress will look striking when combined with red heels and a red handbag. Or try black and white for a stunning contrast.

Belt up

Belts do much more than keep up your trousers, they can add a touch of style and sophistication. They are also important in terms of defining your silhouette and accentuating your waist.

Additionally, they can introduce or add a contrasting or co-ordinating element to the rest of your outfit.

When buying a belt, bear the following points in mind:-

1. Consider its width. If you are petite, avoid chunky, wide belts which are in a contrasting colour to your outfit. This will give the impression of breaking up your body shape and making you appear smaller. If you have an enviable waist, be sure to wear a belt to accentuate this good feature. If you do not have a small waist, do not belt your pants up too tightly. Avoid extra wide belts too lest they highlight any bulges.

2. Always choose a belt which is in keeping with your outfit. It is important to consider the colour, material, and style of the belt. A no-nonsense one will look good with a business suit or classic trousers while an ornate style or velvet and patent varieties are best suited to evening wear.

3. Make time to experiment with different colours, styles, and materials. Some choices will set off an outfit instantly while others may lack the zing factor.

4. Be adventurous. Some unlikely combinations may offer an exciting alternative to tried and tested winners. Move out of your comfort zone and play around with different looks. If you are not normally an adventurous dresser, use accessories as a safe way of changing your style. A bright belt may be the right step in this direction. Or channel your inner designer and use a length of chain to make your own simple belt. Equally, you could opt for a cheap and cheerful long string of pearls which could be used as a decorative belt. This will make a style statement and will allow your personality to shine through.

5. Follow the fashion trends for belts each season to see what is in vogue and how items are being styled to best effect.

6. Remember, belts draw attention to your mid section. If you are not keen on emphasising yours but would still like to wear a belt, add a blazer or cardigan to distract the eye from your tubby tum. It will also give the illusion of a trim waistline.

7. Classy belts can be quite expensive but it may be worth investing in one. It will wear well and elevate other items, including budget buys, in your wardrobe. Conversely, a cheap belt can ruin your look and downgrade even investment pieces. An easy way to upgrade an inexpensive fashion piece is to replace a fabric belt with a leather one or to choose a belt with a stylish buckle.
