Acclaimed Dublin ensemble Glasshouse will perform a new arrangement of the work of renowned composer and music pioneer Ryuichi Sakamoto at the Róisín Dubh this Saturday, July 27, from 7.30pm.
Part of the Galway International Arst Festival, the concert will honour the incredible and widely lauded work of Sakamoto, who passed away earlier this year. Glasshouse has the blessing of Sakamoto’s team for this tribute.
Renowned Japanese composer, actor and producer Ryuichi Sakamoto was admired for his electronic music experimentation. He formed Yellow Magic Orchestra in 1978 and released eight studio albums with the group.
He starred in the film Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence with David Bowie in 1983. His film score for The Last Emperor, in 1987, won him an Oscar, a Grammy and a Golden Globe. He continued to work throughout his life, releasing an album in January 2023, just two months before his passing.
Expect music on the night from his vast repertoire including works from 1996, Playing the Piano and Solid State Survivor by Yellow Magic Orchestra amongst many more. All in new arrangements for an ensemble of eight musicians, including piano, synths, strings and drums. The show features a newly commissioned visual design to accompany the evening.
Glasshouse is a music ensemble and arts organisation based in Dublin. Its mission is to elevate Irish music through commission and collaboration, combining sound, space and visual design to create unforgettable music experiences.
Recent projects include new works for the theremin electronic instrument, a new commission by R Kitt and collaborative projects with Irish artists Æ MAK, Caoi de Barra, Rachael Lavelle, and Gareth Quinn Redmond.
Previous Glasshouse performances include works by Kate Bush, Bon Iver, and Johann Johannsson’s Orphée.
