The Ford Capri has returned in electric format.

After almost four decades away, the Capri nameplate is making its return to the Ford lineup, but this time in the guise of an all-electric SUV. While the original Capri is a cult classic, Ford claims that its new iteration of the Capri is "the car the iconic sports coupe was destined to become".

The new Ford Capri is built on Volkswagen Group's MEB electric vehicle platform, with two powertrain options available. The first is an all-wheel drive (AWD ) variant equipped with twin electric motors for 340hp and a 0-100km/h time of 5.3 seconds. This has a 79kWh battery with a quoted WLTP range of up to 592km.

There will also be an extended range rear-wheel drive (RWD ) model. This has a 286hp electric motor providing a 0-100km/h sprint time of 6.4 seconds, while its 77kWh battery gives a quoted WLTP range of up to 627km.

DC charging is up to 135kW for the RWD and 185kW for the AWD, both of which can be charged from 10-80 per cent capacity in less than half an hour, according to Ford.

The brand describes the interior as luxurious with a minimalist and digital feel, with soft touch materials and sculptured one-piece front seats. Standard high specification comfort includes keyless entry and start, heated front seats and steering wheel, dual-zone climate control and driver’s seat with massage and memory function.

The new Ford Capri has up to 572 litres of boot space, a foldable boot floor, a 17-litre MegaConsole beneath the front armrest and more storage behind the sliding 14.6-inch centre screen.

Available colour choices include 'Blue My Mind' and an exclusive 'Vivid Yellow' (pictured ). The new SUV comes with either 19 or 20-inch wheels depending on spec.

Irish pricing for the new Ford Capri will be confirmed at a later date.
