Misneach Menopause is a specialist Menopause Clinic founded by Dr Marina Curran who is one of only a few trained menopause specialists in this country.

A menopause specialist is a healthcare professional who has additional knowledge and skills, assessing and treating women with complex needs such as; multiple treatment failures; POI; complex medical problems; high risk cancer genes; or hormone dependant cancer.

Menopause is a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman's reproductive years. It is defined as occurring 12 months after a woman's last menstrual period and can also happen as a result of surgery or medical treatments.

Menopause typically takes place in a woman's late 40's to early 50's but it can vary widely. 70 to 80 per cent of women experience one or more symptoms. 50 per cent of women will experience symptoms for about seven years, and one-third will experience ongoing symptoms for longer.

The transition period leading up to menopause is called perimenopause, during which women may experience a variety of symptoms due to fluctuating hormone levels. Common symptoms include, hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, sleep disturbance, vaginal dryness, decreased sex drive, or irregular/heavier periods.

Menopause is a normal part of aging, and while it can bring about significant physical and emotional changes, treatments and lifestyle adjustments can help manage symptoms. This transition can significantly impact future health due to hormonal changes, primarily the decline in oestrogen levels and it is important for women to look after their heart, bone, and cognitive health for their future wellbeing.

Dr Curran is a GP with a burning passion for women's health, particularly in the realm of menopause care. With years of training she is dedicated to ensuring that every woman receives the specialised care she deserves during this transformative phase of life.

By raising awareness and enhancing understanding, she hopes to empower women with the knowledge they need to navigate through this transformative phase with confidence and vitality. There are approximately one-billion women worldwide who are postmenopausal. This number is expected to increase as life expectancy rises and the global population ages. By 2030, it is projected that around 1.2 billion women will be postmenopausal, with 47 million new entrants each year. These figures highlight the growing need for awareness, research, and healthcare services tailored to the needs of each individual woman.

Since December 2022, Dr Curran has been the GP Clinical Lead in the Complex Menopause Clinic in UHG and is the founder of Misneach Menopause. She has also worked in the Symptomatic Breast Unit since 2014. Having looked after almost 200 patients to date, she has witnessed the transformative impact of specialist care on women's lives; "Menopause is a time to celebrate the end of one chapter and the beginning of another."
