On the twentieth anniversary of the release of his critically acclaimed album, Since Kyabram, esteemed singer-songwriter Declan O’Rourke will perform at Leisureland next Wednesday, June 5, as part of the upcoming 2024 Galway Folk Festival.
The award-winning O'Rourke's journey in acoustic, folk and rock genres began in his mid-teens, inspired by a guitar gifted to him while living in Australia.
His acoustic approach and paired back song writing delve into themes of love, history, and the human condition, with a strong social consciousness, making him a distinctive and cherished voice in contemporary music.
By 24, he returned to Ireland, immersing himself in Dublin's vibrant music scene. Since then, he has performed extensively at prestigious venues across the globe.
Released in 2004, his debut album Since Kyabram earned him a reputation as a masterful lyricist and talented guitarist, delivering songs with emotion and empathy, firmly grounded in storytelling.
Songs like ‘Galileo’ confirmed his status as one of Ireland’s leading lights, and his album quickly went gold, then achieved double-platinum status.
Over the years, O’Rourke has released a series of albums that reflect his evolving artistry, five of which have enjoyed top-five status in the national charts.
Each body of work offers a unique glimpse into his versatility as a musician, his rich and soulful vocals resonating with audiences worldwide.
His album Arrivals, was nominated for International Album of the Year by the Americana Music Association in Britain.
With notable fans such as Rolling Stones guitarist, Ronnie Wood, and Chris Rea, Paul Brady and Eddi Reader, he has earned a reputation as one of the finest songwriters on the planet.
During his career, he has opened multiple shows for Planxty, performed on the same bill as Bob Dylan, while also playing guitar with Paddy Casey and Snow Patrol.
His literary debut, ‘The Pawnbroker’s Reward,’ soared to number two in the bestseller charts and was followed by ‘A Whisper From Oblivion’.
O’Rourke will be supported on the night by acoustic folk singer-songwriter Saoirse Casey.
She is a seasoned live performer, having appeared on stage with numerous Irish artists including her father Paddy Casey, and with Mundy, Wallis Bird, Cathy Davey and Kila.
Her debut album, ‘Lunaria’ is inspired by her deep love of the earth and all its hidden places, featuring a broad spectrum of enchanting songs of fables, lullabies and powerful expressions of love.
