52 candidates confirmed for 2024 city election

And they’re off! 52 candidates have taken to the field for the Galway City Council elections to be held in just two weeks’ time on Friday, June 7.

Polling Day: 18 seats to be filled

Voting will be open from 7am to 10pm in 14 polling stations across the west, central and east wards of the local authority area.

Voters in Galway City Central Local Electoral Area (LEA ) have a choice of 16 candidates for six seats. Sitting councillors Mike Cubbard (Ind ), Frank Fahy (FG ), Eddie Hoare (FG ), and Martina O’Connor (GP ) will be running again, while non-party Cllr Colette Connolly (Ind ) has not thrown her name in the ring, nor has Cllr Imelda Byrne (FF ).

Peace activist Margaretta D’Arcy, retired airline worker Patrick Feeney, administrator Shauna Ridge, and mechanic Dara O’Flaherty are all running as non-party candidates.

Sean Comer is running for The Irish People, Mary Cummins for the Irish Freedom Party, Adrian Curran for People Before Profit – Solidarity, Josie Forde for Fianna Fáil, Pádraig Lenihan for Aontú, Mark Lohan for Sinn Féin, John McDonagh for Labour, Shauna Ridge for Independent Ireland and Eibhlín Seoighthe for the Social Democrats.

Over in City West LEA, referred to in this election as the “ward of death” by a number of candidates, 16 hopefuls will vie for six seats.

Councillors John Connolly (FF ), Clodagh Higgins (FG ), Peter Keane (FF ), Donal Lyons (Ind ), Níall McNelis (Lab ), and Niall Murphy (GP ) are all running again, with councillor Alan Curran (SD ) currently co-opted for Galway City East aiming for a seat in his own neighbourhood.

AJ Cahill is running for The Irish People, Asraf Chowdhury for Fine Gael, Cathal Ó Conchúir for Sinn Féin, Maisie McMaster for PBP-Solidarity, and Rory O’Beirne for Irish Freedom Party. Non-party candidates include Kenny Deery, Jarlath Feeney, Denis Nealis and Esther Osayimwen.

Galway City East LEA boasts a whopping 20 candidates for six seats. Councillors Alan Cheevers (FF ), Michael Crowe (FF ), Noel Larkin (II ), Declan McDonnell (Ind ), Terry O’Flaherty (Ind ) are all running again, while Cllr Curran is transferring west of the Corrib.

Aisling Burke is running for Sinn Féin, Conor Burke and Denman Rooke for PBP-Solidarity, Cormac Ó Corcoráin for Aontú, Justine Delany Heaslip for Social Democrats, Susan Feeney for Irish Freedom Party, Shane Forde and Aisling Keogh for Fine Gael, Jacinta Gibbons the Irish People, Joyce Mathias for the Green Party, and Helen Ogbu for Labour.

Non-party candidates include product builder Conor Dowd, caretaker David Lynch, quality inspector Michael Tully and factory operator Arkadiusz Wozniak.
