•The popular Galway Schools Soccer and Gaelic Football Academy returns to St Mary’s College this month. Two camps, from July 13 to July 17 and July 20 to July 24 will be held from 9am to 1pm daily. Directed by Sean Og de Paor, Martin Horgan, and Robert Grealish, this successful mix of sports has been a resounding success over the past decade. Quality coaching, fine facilities, and prizes for all participants - not forgetting the daily soup and roll for each child - are the hallmarks of the St Mary’s academy. •NUIG student Kristin Riall claimed victory in the National Triathlon Championships at the weekend. The Galway Triathlon Club athlete’s time of 3:00:27 was good enough to win the female 20-24 years category. Riall was one of three Galway club members who posted significant times at the event held in Kilkee, Co Clare. The first Galway athlete home was Mark O’Duffy who posted a time of 2:26:46 to secure a top 50 place in a field of some 600 triathletes, having finished well inside the top 20 racing in Mullaghmore, Co Sligo, the previous weekend. Another notable result was Gary Costelloe who took a third place in the men’s 45-49 years category - the Oughterard man coming home in 2:33:22.
•Local heart charity Croí is appealing to novice and experienced runners to take to the streets of Galway on August 8 on their behalf. The Streets of Galway Run is an annual 8km event which attracts 2,000 runners and walkers from all over the country. •Members of Ippon Sambo/ Judo Club, Tuam, participated in Tipperary Open Charity Judo Championships and Community Games County final recently. The team included Kornel Kelemen, county bronze medal; Colm Mitchell- silver at Tipperary Open and county silver; Quinlain Gannon, Kevin Lawless, county bronze, and Olaf Matuszewski. •There were blessings at NUIG Boat Club this week when the NUIG ladies celebrated their new filipi 8. The boat has been a long awaited addition to the fleet and will get great use over the next two weeks as the girls prepare for the national championships which take place in Cork. They will be racing the 8 at both novice and intermediate level and have high hopes for both events following a tough years training.
•Rathun Caislean Nua Hurling club will hold its annual golf classic on Friday July 10 at Oughterard Golf club. Teams of three, costing €120 per team, will compete for some fabulous prizes, including green fees for the renowned Druids Glen. •A powerful second-half performance ensured a 3-17 to 1-4 victory for Galway’s senior camogie team over Clare in Athenry. Galway held a slender two-point lead at the break, 1-5 to 1-3, but with Veronica Curtin scored 2-4, aided to Aislinn Connolly’s haul of 1-8, Galway were comfortable winners in the end.
