Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has unveiled first details for the all-new Transporter, which is due to go on sale in early 2025.
The new Transporter line-up will include a panel van in two different lengths and heights, a Kombi, a dropside vehicle with double cab and the Caravelle.
According to Volkswagen, the van will have a carrying capacity ranging from 5.8 cubic metres to 9.0 cubic metres and a payload of up to 1,330Kg.
The new Transporter is 5,050mm long – this represents an increase of 146mm compared with the predecessor. The wheelbase has been extended by 97mm to 3,100mm, and there will be an optional 400mm-longer wheelbase (total length: 5,450mm ).
At 2,032mm, its exterior width is 128mm more than the predecessors (without exterior mirrors ).
Thanks to the increased exterior length, width and wheelbase, Volkswagen says it has been able to enlarge the load capacity of the new generation. The maximum width between the wheel housings has been increased by 148mm to 1,392mm.
The payload of the Transporter with standard wheelbase and TDI drive has risen from 1.2 to 1.3 tonnes. Volkswagen has increased the maximum trailer weight (braked with 12% gradient ) of this version from 2.5 to 2.8 tonnes and the maximum dynamic roof load has grown from 150kg to 170kg.
The new Transporter is built on platform developed by Ford and is twinned with the new Transit Custom.
When it goes on sale, the Transporter will be offered with diesel, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains. The TDI will be offered in three power outputs: 110PS, 150PS and 170PS. The plug-in hybrid will have 233PS.
Electric versions will be offered with 116PS, 136PS, 218PS and 286PS. The 116PS version will use a 54kWh battery, while the other variants will have an 83kWh unit.
In front of the driver, the Transporter’s new digital cockpit landscape is visible on one viewing axis. This consists of the 12-inch instrument cluster and the 13-inch touchscreen for the standard infotainment system.
The van also features a new multifunction steering wheel with buttons that are easy to operate even when wearing gloves.
