Representatives from local financial institutions and An Garda Síochána will deliver a talk on fraud awareness and financial digital literacy to members of the community on Thursday next May 16 at 11.15am in the Europe Direct Centre at Ballinasloe Library.
This event will focus on protection tips for remaining financially secure when online and on the phone. Social engineering tactics are becoming increasingly common and ever more sophisticated to trick you into parting with your financial information and money.
Local fraud experts Lorna Blake (BOI ), Catherine Rabbitte (AIB ) and David Dully, Community Garda, will advise on simple actions you can take to help safeguard your finances from smishing to phishing, online shopping fraud, investment / romance scams, and invoice redirection.
‘While most financial frauds still use phone, texts and emails to commit the crime, the frauds themselves are increasingly clever using technology and publicly available information to trick you. You are likely to get an email or a phone call from somebody you “know” and “trust” or shop on a website that looks legitimate.’ said the Banking Payments Federation of Ireland
Europe Direct Ballinasloe is part of a network of information centres that distribute information and advice about the European Union. The Centre assists citizens and stakeholders with questions about EU policies, programmes and priorities, and gives the public the opportunity to send feedback to its institutions, actively promoting local and regional debate about the EU.
