The Green Party plans to win a seat in every county, including Galway City East in the June local elections for the first time ever. The target was announced as more than 500 party members gathered in the RDS for a convention which urged voters to Keep Going Green.
The Greens are running a record 111 local candidates with an even balance of male and female candidates. This includes candidates in Galway City west Cllr Niall Murphy, Galway City Centre; Cllr Martina O’Connor, Senator Pauline O’Reilly who is running for the European Elections and Joyce Mathias in Galway City East.
Minister Catherine Martin was among the attendees at the convention and highlighted the work of Greens across Ireland
“Over the past four years, the Green Party has introduced policies that benefit both people and the planet. These policies reduce emissions and restore nature but also lower people’s bills and improve their quality of life. Around 150 homes are putting solar panels on their homes every day and generating clean energy from the sun, while slashing their electricity bills. Another thousand households are waking up to warmer homes and lower fuels bills every week thanks to the retrofitting grants.”
“This is a milestone achievement! I am delighted I was at the convention as part of the national green team and I had the opportunity to discuss with some of the leaders about issues that are of concern in Galway City East. Being able to bring up grassroots issues to my leaders attention is paramount hence the grassroots issues are my concern and where my focus is,” added Minister Martin
Climate change will hit future generations hardest, so it is no surprise that the Green Party has one of the highest proportions of young candidates running in the local elections. A quarter of candidates are under the age of 35. At a time of climate crisis, it has never been more important to have green voices on councils and in Europe,” she concluded.
