A concerning lack of awareness about voting rights among some residents of Galway, particularly migrants, has been identified by Helen Ogbu, the Labour Party Candidate for Galway City East in the coming local elections. This has come to light during canvassing efforts ahead of the June 7 Local Elections in Galway City neighbourhoods, notably in Doughiska, which boasts the most diverse population in the city.
Having canvassed extensively in Galway City neighbourhoods, including the vibrant community of Doughiska, Helen has personally encountered constituents who are unaware of their right to register and vote in the local elections. This firsthand experience has underscored the urgent need for increased awareness and education initiatives.
Ms Ogbu points out that for residents wishing to participate in shaping their community’s future, participation in the democratic process is a critical step, and that process begins with voter registration. “Many migrants and young individuals reaching voting age are unaware of their rights and responsibilities as voters and are unsure of the voting process”, says Helen.
Drawing from her own experiences and conversations with residents, Helen Ogbu proposes targeted awareness campaigns in plain language, tailored to address the specific needs of those who may be voting for the first time. “We need clear, accessible information that resonates with everyone in our diverse community,” she emphasizes.
While acknowledging the hard work of Galway City Council staff, Helen emphasizes the importance of additional campaigns and publicity to ensure that all residents are informed and empowered to exercise their right to vote.
“Our city’s strength lies in its diversity, and every voice deserves to be heard,” she adds. She notes how the initiative for a National Voter Registration Day in Ireland, scheduled for April 30 provides the ideal opportunity to raise awareness about this vital issue.
She hopes that all political parties, city and county councils and the many other relevant organisations will engage in a collective effort to encourage voter registration across the country and ensure no eligible voter is left behind.
As a Labour Party candidate for Galway City East in the upcoming Local Elections, Helen urges all residents to act by getting registered and ensuring that their voices are heard. “This is your city,” she emphasizes, “make your vote count by registering today.”
