Organised by the Embassy of Italy in Ireland, the Italian Institute of Culture and the Italian Irish Chamber of Commerce, the N.I.C.E Italian Film Festival will take place from April 25 until May 5, in Dublin, Cork and Galway. The festival will screen Italian films by some of Italy’s best contemporary directors including Sydney Sibilia, Andrea Di Stefano and Maria Sole Tognazzi.
This is the third year of the Italian Film Festival in Ireland and it is the first time that screenings will take place in Galway.
Ruggero Corrias, Ambassador of Italy to Ireland said, “It is a great pleasure to host the third edition of the N.I.C.E. Italian Film Festival this year. Thanks to the commitment of the Italian institutions in Ireland such as the Embassy, the Institute of Culture and the Italian-Irish Chamber of Commerce, together with local partners, the festival will arrive in three cities: Dublin, Cork and Galway.
"This year we celebrate a very particular anniversary. On the April 20, 1954, the Italian Institute of Culture was inaugurated in its current location in Dublin, and we are glad to celebrate 70 years of promoting both Italian language and culture with this event.”
Galway goes 'N.I.C.E' for the first time
The Galway edition of the N.I.C.E festival is organised in collaboration with the discipline of Italian at the University of Galway and with the Galway Film Society. It will be hosted at Pálás cinema on May 3-5.
There will be two pre-events: a cinema-themed pub quiz at The Dew Drop Inn (12 Mainguard Street, Galway ) at 8:00pm on April 25; and a programme launch with free screening on April 26 at 5:00pm in the Colm Ó hEocha Theatre, Arts Millennium Building, University of Galway. The programme will be launched by Matilde Castagnoli (N.I.C.E. executive director ), Louise Casey Conneally (Galway Film Society ), Andrea Ciribuco and Michela Dianetti (University of Galway ). It will be followed by a free screening of the film Mixed By Erry (S. Sibilia ) and a Q&A with the lead actors Luigi D’Oriano and Giuseppe Arena.
During the first weekend of May, the festival will start at 6:30 pm on May 3, with a wine reception at the Bar at Pálás followed by the screening of Maria Sole Tognazzi’s film Dieci Minuti. Other films include Il primo giorno della mia vita (P. Genovese ), La chimera (A. Rohrwacher ), L’ultima notte di Amore (A. Di Stefano ). Irish-based Italian musician Simone Di Addezio will play a selection of acoustic covers of Italian classics and film soundtracks on the evenings of May 3 and 4, in a duet with violinist Tamara Musukova.
The Galway screening of L’Ultima Notte di Amore on May 5 will be the closing event of the festival in Ireland. The N.I.C.E. Italian Film Festival will showcase the work of emerging Italian Directors including Margherita Buy, Micaela Ramazzotti, Michele Riondino and will also screen films from established directors, such as Paolo Genovese, Matteo Garrone, Alice Rohrwacher to create an intriguing mix of themes and genres.
