The annual Kiltullagh Killimordaly community spring clean took place again last weekend and continues to build on the success of previous years.
This is part of the An Taisce national spring clean, however a unique feature of the Killtullagh Killimordaly spring clean is the use of Google Maps to track progress. Local candidate for election, Eoin Madden, who has a passion for technology and a mentor at Coder Dojo coding club, uses WhatsApp and Google Maps to update the community throughout the weekend, to let volunteers know which townlands have had a litter pick and which need attention.
“We had dozens of volunteers, of all ages, out on the bog roads and boreens, picking up litter and bagging it. It shows the great community spirit in Kiltullagh Killimordaly who set out to rid the verges of plastic and other rubbish. The volunteers are doing something to benefit people and nature, while getting to meet their neighbours”, said Eoin Madden, the PRO of Kiltullagh Killimordaly Community Alert.
Tribute was paid to community litter warden, Christopher Harrington, for the support provided, as well as Killimordaly GAA Green Club and The Galway Plaza.
Four days of cleaning, involving dozens of volunteers, collected hundreds of bags of litter and filled at least one skip.
