Trill calls on Maroon Army support

Galway United head coach Phil Trill is calling on supporters for Saturday night

Determined to extend their perfect start to the season, manager Phil Trill has demanded home support for Galway United Women against Bohemians. The game is this Saturday, April 13 at 5pm in Eamonn Deacy Park.

Trill has been pleased with the season’s start but was measured in his praise, mindful that United had a similarly fast beginning last season before being reined in.

After a scintillating game in Sligo last time out, thoughts turned immediately to the visit of Bohs to Galway this weekend.

Trill said: “It’s a really good squad. We have added really well from last year. Everyone has their part to play. We are hoping a big crowd comes out for this game. We really want people to get behind the ladies.”

“Obviously, we have started quite well but it is a long season, so we need the support at every game. We need the Maroon Army to come out in force for our first game in Eamonn Deacy Park."

Trill’s new recruits have indeed impressed. Emily Kavanaugh and Lucy Jane Grant have both made an impact in the early league games. However the re-emergence of Julie Ann Russell has been one of the stories of the season so far.

Her class has added a new dynamism to the team. Combining with talented midfielders like Jenna Slattery, Lynsey McKey and Kate Thompson, United have been potent in attack, even in the absence of Aislinn Meaney.

Trill has also been able to rely on an established back line which has kept three clean sheets before the frantic game in Sligo. He has done this while managing to rotate, giving valuable playing time to 21 players in their first four games.

Saturday’s opponents are likely to present a greater challenge than their recent league form might suggest. After a superb win away to Wexford on the opening weekend of the season, Bohs have suffered two disappointing reversals at home to Athlone and Cork respectively. Coincidentally, both sides have been beaten by United this season.

Having lost last season’s star striker Sarah Rowe to Aussie Rules, Bohs haven’t carried the same threat up front in the league. They did however put four past Lisburn in the Avenir All-Island Cup. Having won in Eamonn Deacy Park last season, they should not be taken lightly by their hosts.

As ever, United will be focused on their own process. Their supporters will travel to Eamonn Deacy Park wondering just how high the ceiling might be for these great Galway ambassadors.
