Hailing from Hamburg, the Angels of Libra are a captivating force in soul. Together with Irish singer-songwriter Nathan Johnston, they will bring old school soundscapes and modern grooves to Monroe’s Live on Saturday, April 27, at 11pm.
It’s all part of Monroe’s Saturday ‘Isn’t It Midnight’ events, which bring together top DJs and bands over two stages at midnight.
With Dennis Rux on guitar, David Nesselhauf on bass, Lucas Kochbeck on drums, and Chris Haertel on organ and synthesizer, these well-seasoned musicians have been active in Hamburg’s soul scene for many years. They have created a name for themselves through other musical projects such as the Hamburg Spinners and Tetrao Urogallus.
Angels of Libra was born in a Danish holiday home, blending analogue recording techniques with 60s soul revue concepts. They incorporate cinematic influences reminiscent of icons like Ennio Morricone, Khruangbin, and Air.
While looking for a suitable voices, they were fated to come across Nathan Johnston at Hamburg’s Clouds Hill Studios.
From the writing and recording of one track, a self-titled debut EP was crafted in 2022, exploring themes of courage, perseverance, and discovery.
The album includes the introspective ‘In A Different World’ to the socially conscious ‘Modern Times’ and ‘Jericho,’ navigating a spectrum of emotions and reflections on society with a nod to mythology.
With funky vocals and dynamic rhythms, they explore the parameters of modern soul music. Since then, they’ve gone on to record two more albums, with another in the pipeline.
As they continue to captivate audiences, their upcoming performance at Monroe's Live with Nathan Johnston promises to be an exciting set straight from Motown.
