Stronger together, Galway tourism networking event is told

A large group of tourism businesses met last week in Maigh Cuilinn to explore opportunities for collaboration and to discuss the promotion of Connemara and the Islands as a tourist destination. There was a good mix of accommodation, visitor centres, activity providers, tour providers and members of the retail sector present on the day. The theme of the event was ‘Stronger Together - Ní neart go cur le chéile.’

Keynote speaker on the day was Nuala Mulqueeney - Managing Director of Aillwee Burren Experience who gave an account of her experience on the benefits of collaboration and networking. Representatives from Fáilte Ireland - Wild Atlantic Way Team, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Galway County Council & CAITN also made contributions on the day. There was also ample time for the attendees to network with each other and make new connections.

Speaking after the event, Daith O’Gallagher of Fáilte Ireland commented that ‘we cannot underestimate the value of networking in the tourism industry.

“We know that the most successful destinations across the Wild Atlantic Way are those who come together in collaboration and sell their area together. The work Costa Gaelach does in solidifying and strengthening the connections within Connemara’s tourism industry is vital.

He said that the theme this year ‘“is more appropriate than ever before as there are significant challenges facing the industry at present, those challenges can only be overcome by working together, selling their offering together, and collectively reminding people why Connemara is one of the Wild Atlantic Way’s most unique and inspiring destinations.”

“This event was an opportunity for tourism businesses to get to know each other. Networking and sales are very important in tourism. People come on holiday to a destination where there is a lot to see and a lot to do. It is important to know what’s available around you.’

Meadbh Seoighe, Feidhmeannach Turasóireachta le hÚdarás na Gaeltachta told attendees that no matter how big or small their business is, their story needs to be shared with all suppliers.

‘Terry O’Toole – CAITN Co-Chair said that a key part of the 2017’s Destination & Experience Development Plan for Connemara and the Islands is to foster coordination and collaboration across the tourism industry.

“Costa Gaelach continues to play a central role in delivering this objective as evidenced by the great attendance at this event.”

Dominic Ó Móráin, Interim Chairperson, Chósta Gaelach Chonamara agus Árann said they achieved a lot as a destination and there is clearly more to come.

“This event is testament to our belief that we can expand the unique offerings of Connemara and the Islands through networking and collaboration, we look forward to helping to enhance the visitor experience and ensure sustainable growth for our businesses and communities.”
