A total of 102 suicide deaths were recorded in Galway city and county from 2019 to 2022, the highest number reported in the west, north-west, and mid-west in that period, according to the Central Statistics Office.
Twenty-five people took their lives in Galway city while 77 people died by suicide in Galway county in that four year timeframe. Eight suicide deaths occurred in Galway city in 2019, five took place in 2020, seven in 2021, and five in 2022.
There were 13 deaths by suicide recorded in Galway county in 2019, 23 in 2020, 25 in 2021, and 16 in 2022. The Galway figures are the highest reported in nine counties - Clare, Donegal, Leitrim, Limerick, Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, and Tipperary.
The second highest figures, 89, were recorded in Limerick, 41 in the city and 48 in the county followed by Tipperary at 83. A total of 506 suicide deaths were reported in the nine counties from 2019 to 2022. The lowest number, seven, was recorded in Leitrim. Fifty-one people took their lives in Co Mayo in that period - 12 in 2019, 15 in 2020 and 2021, and nine in 2022.
