Free gigs for new bands in Galway

Galwegian record label Strange Brew is launching a new series of free events to showcase local, musical talent.

Beginning next week, February 22, Strange Brew will present a series of late-night shows featuring bands every Thursday at the Róisín Dubh. The plan is to promote an unforgettable musical experience for both artists and music enthusiasts, without a cover charge.

“If bands are out there and want to get involved, they need to send an EPK – electronic press kit – including images, music and text, and we’ll take it from there,” says Strange Brew’s main booker, Gugai.

The Róisín Dubh has a long-running up-and-coming band slot at midnight each Friday, but the amount of emerging talent in the west of Ireland has prompted the famous music venue to offer a second weekly opportunity.

Gugai points to the latest Galway garage band to be signed, Shark School. The three-piece punk rock outfit, fronted by Nora Staunton, has regularly performed at open stage events. Their new single, '411' - a disrespectful ode to the Knocknacarra-Eyre Square bus, will be released on Tuesday, February 29.

“Yes this is all part of getting back to more live music post-Covid,” says Gugai, adding that although Galwegian musicians have been great at creating and producing in their bedrooms during the pandemic, it’s high time to get back out there and perform in front of the public.

Strange Brew is aiming to curate a lineup that promises diversity, innovation, and pure musical passion.

The Bog Project will feature in February 22, followed by Monotypes on February 29. Siúcra and The Amniotics will play March 7 and March 21 respectively. Fizzy Orange are lined-up for April 4, and Daith on April 11.

In a statement, the label says that this is not just a concert series: “It's a celebration of the rich tapestry of musical talent that Ireland has to offer. From indie and alternative to experimental sounds, each Thursday night promises a sonic journey that transcends genres, making it a haven for music lovers seeking fresh, authentic experiences”.

Bands selected for this series will have the opportunity to showcase their original compositions in front of an enthusiastic and diverse audience. It is hoped this exposure will prove invaluable for up-and-coming artists looking to connect with fans who appreciate the raw energy and creativity that defines live, original music. By removing financial barriers, the series aims to encourage a diverse audience to explore the richness of Galway's music scene, fostering a supportive community that embraces creativity and originality.
