Mental health charity publishes four tips on healing heartbreak

Valentine's Day can be a difficult time for people who are healing from a break-up. If you're feeling down this week due to heartbreak, national mental health charity Turn2Me has some advice on how to help yourself bounce back.

“The first tip is to make a list of your ex’s faults,” said Fiona O'Malley, CEO of Turn2Me. “Although this might sound petty, it will stop you reminiscing about the good times or looking back at the relationship with rose tinted glasses. For the same reason, making a list of why you’re incompatible can help.

“The second tip is to start a self-care routine. Establishing a nurturing daily routine, including exercising, eating well, and prioritising sleep can help. If you engage in activities that bring joy, like hobbies or spending time with loved ones, it can lift your mood. Self-care fosters healing by restoring your physical and emotional well-being, helping you regain strength and resilience.

“The third tip is to seek therapeutic support, if needed. Therapy offers a safe space to process emotions and gain insights into the breakup. Therapists provide coping strategies, facilitate healing discussions, and offer guidance for moving forward. Talking to a trained counsellor can ease the burden of heartbreak.

“The fourth and final tip is planning personal growth,” she continued. “Explore self-improvement, new interests, set goals, or pursue education, travel, and career opportunities. Channelling energy into personal development empowers you to redefine your identity and find fulfilment outside the relationship. Embrace the opportunity for growth and transformation as you navigate through heartbreak.”
