A revered figure in traditional Irish music, Andy Irvine will bring decades of touring experience to Monroe’s Live on Friday, February 16, at 7:30pm.
As a solo artist, Irvine is the ultimate troubadour, inspired by his lifelong influence, Woody Guthrie, with tales and stories woven amidst a unique blend of traditional songs, Balkan dance tunes and his own, self-penned melodies.
Renowned for his solo endeavours and contributions to iconic Irish bands like Planxty, Patrick Street, and the more recent Mozaik, LAPD and Usher’s Band, Irvine’s musical journey has been a global odyssey.
Having embarked on his touring career with Sweeney’s Men in 1965, his wanderlust led him to Bulgaria, Romania, and Yugoslavia, immersing himself in their diverse music traditions.
This inspired him to incorporate the bouzouki into his repertoire, enabling the development of a unique style influenced by the Balkan countries he visited.
Upon returning to Ireland, Irvine co-founded Planxty, a ground-breaking ensemble featuring Christy Moore, Dónal Lunny, and Liam O’Flynn.
The band played a pivotal role in revitalising traditional music’s popularity. During a hiatus in 1967, Irvine collaborated with Paul Brady, producing the acclaimed album Andy Irvine & Paul Brady. Post-Planxty, the singer-songwriter embarked on a successful solo and collaborative career.
In 1987, he became part of super group Patrick Street, featuring Kevin Burke, Jackie Daly, and Arty McGlynn, further solidifying Irvine’s influence on the traditional genre. Meanwhile, he continued his solo ventures, including a Balkan-themed album reflecting his earlier explorations.
In 2002, he brought together his “dream band” Mozaik, with Dónal Lunny, Dutch guitarist Rens van der Zalm, Hungarian bagpiper Nikola Parov and American fiddler Bruce Molsky.
His legacy continues through his ongoing global tours with Mozaik and Patrick Street, as well as reunion concerts with Planxty, Paul Brady and his sought-after solo performances.
