Fresh from performing ‘Land Of My Other’ on The Tommy Tiernan Show, lyrical duo The Breath bring their lush alt-folk stylings to Monroe’s Live on Tuesday, February 20, at 8pm
Comprising guitarist Stuart McCallum and BBC Folk Award-winning singer Ríoghnach Connolly, this fully seated show will feature their exquisitely crafted, personal songs that take listeners on a journey of myriad narratives.
At the core of The Breath is Connolly's captivating voice and McCallum's musical prowess; together the pairing evoke a unique emotional resonance.
Hailing from a strong traditional and folk background, Connolly learned flute at the Armagh Pipers Club and began her singing career with Comhaltas, at Oireachtas and Slógagh before moving to Manchester at the age of 19.
She writes heartfelt lyrics with poetic consciousness, giving rise to honest recollections of childhood summers of first love, cultural dislocation and grief. Her soulful, hypnotic voice, whether delicate and hushed or powerful and gutsy, is complemented by McCallum's understated skill. The Mancunian also has a background in jazz guitar with Cinematic Orchestra.
Their third album, Land Of My Other, is a place of memories and melodies, lyricism, and lore with raw, acoustic-minded music and subtle synths.
Exploring themes of famine and emigration, incarceration, and ancestral trauma, the album yields a tapestry of emotions, where personal and political themes intertwine.
