Gort’s Coole Music Youth Orchestra has been invited to play at the National Concert Hall in Dublin next month as part of the prestigious Annual Festival of Youth Orchestras.
This celebration of Irish youth orchestras, and their talented members, will feature a variety of music played by young people, for young people, on Saturday, 10 February at the national venue on Earlsfort Terrace. The event is held under the auspices of the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras (IAYO ).
“We are so excited to be playing at the IAYO Festival again at the National Concert Hall. Due to the Covid interruption, it has been full nine years since we performed there with our youth orchestra, which means a whole generation of young players has missed this opportunity,” says Katharina Baker, artistic director for Coole Music & Arts.
There will be two concerts, one at 1.00pm and one at 7.30pm, featuring classics such as Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, Shostakovich’s Waltz No 2, a John Williams’ Trilogy and the Irish premiere of Katharina Baker’s Celtic Creature Suite, featuring shapeshifting selkies, the púca and the magical cow Glas Gaibhnenn.
"We are delighted that the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras’ Festival of Youth Orchestras will be at the National Concert Hall in February with nearly 500 young musicians from across Ireland," says Allin Gray, IAYO chief executive. The event will include eight orchestras from Cork, Waterford, Carlow, Galway, Dublin, Limerick, Wexford and Laois.
